Taking you last comments and suggestions to heart I'm posting this image. I photographed this image on Sanibel Island with my handheld Canon 40D. I'd love to know how to get more detail in the whites. The histogram is not blown. Your suggestions are welcome! ISO 200, F/5.6, 1/640 sec, sRGB, EF 70-200mm F/2.8 with 2x II Extender 330mm, No Flash, AV mode, Auto Exposure, Auto WB, Pattern Metering

Hi Richard !!! Light is the key !!!!

You need soft even light for making the best images of white birds. You did not list the exp comp but I'm guessing it was minus a bunch? The bird was illuminated mostly from the top/right? With the sun just coming up just behind you the entire bird would have been illuminated without shadow areas like you have by the feet and underside. The legs are reaching dmax probably.

Crop wise I would like seeing more space to the left and a little (tiny) less to the right. You want more room in the direction the bird is looking. There is proper spacing for the feet, good. Downloaded the image and played around with it in PS but did not get much. You do have tones all across, it just needs the softer light !!

gettin better!!! agree with al on the soft light. it is key!! clouds can be your friend, but the light is normally flat so a flash would help.

hey al, is dmax = maximum density? thanks
