Having recently purchased a Wimberley II, off shoe bracket and cord I went out this evening to try it all out. This was the result, any tips on flash work greatly appreciated.
I like the setting, BG and details. I might give it a bit more room at the right and wish the head were angled more toward you. The bill looks a bit oversharpened on my monitor.
I just love the flower perch and the bird's wide stance on top. I do wish the bird had given you a better head angle,. It would be helpful if you would post your flash settings, but the flash results look good in this image. Very nice capture.
Hi John, beautiful posture and sharpness, head angle doesn't bother me, and exposure is also spot on. I realise why you used f/8 as this gave you the DOF you needed for a portrait at a close distance. I would suggest however that you also experiment with a slightly wider aperture, as this will give a lighter coloured background and less of a "flash" look.
Me again. I took the liberty of playing a bit with your lovely image. I lightened the background and the bird in a separate layer, cloned away a bit of the dark area next to the bird and upped the saturation slightly. I also darkened the exposure on the flower slightly. Would like to know what you think. Rgds Chris
I agree with Chris about upping the ambient exposure a bit and decreasing the flash accordingly to get a less-flashed look, but it's certainly a nice picture of what I'm guessing is a fairly difficult subject.
Thanks for all your encouraging comments and great advice, really appreciated and especially to Chris for showing just how it should be done, Chris, your re-work is incredible, thanks for taking the time to do it for us all to see the vast improvement a little PP can make. I must read through your notes again from our recent course and try to impliment them :).
