I captured this image from a boat in the Kavango River in Botswana. I didn't have time to switch to a smaller lens, so I opted for a close-up as he winged his way towards us. The light was failing, therefore I had to opt for a high ISO to retain shutter speed.

Camera Model: Canon EOS-1D Mark III
    Date/Time: 2007:11:17 18:02:18
    Shutter speed: 1/640 sec
    Aperture: 5.6
    Exposure mode: Av
    Flash: Off
    Metering mode: Multi-segment
    ISO: 1250
    Focal length: 700mm

Chris, a great and different portrait. Exposure and sharpness are right on, and I think the crop works well. Your ability to lock focus on your subjects is amazing!

    Cheers,

This looks great despite the difficult circumstances. I like the eye contact, details and BG.

Lovely eye contact - this must have been a real challenge to follow, focus and frame @700mm - was this hand held or did you have a tripod set up in the boat?. Lovely soft feather texture on the head and neck - obviously has had a good feed with that full crop.

Impressive close-up. I don't mind the clipped wings and agree with our choice of techs.

Very good job capturing this close-up Chris. The light is very sweet and the colour balance between greens, whites and browns works really well. Excelent exposure and lots of details on the head and terrific performance of the MkIII at 1250ISO. Would love to have this one printed at big size and hanging on my wall:)

fantastic capture. perfect sharpness on the head. The light is beautiful as is the BG.
The noise is very good for 1.250.
