I just love woodpeckers of every kind,

and yours is no exception, I like to see the birds in its habitat rather than just on a perch

    Nice photograph :)

A way-cool situation. Did the bird make the hole in the apple? The image is sharp. I would have preferred that you pointed the lens up a bit to place the bird a bit lower in the frame. The bird's posture is awkward as it is leaning away from you and the apples; this results in a less than ideal head angle. The whites look a little hot. Be sure to check for over-exposed highlights both when you are in the field and when you are making a Levels adjustment. If you get the image in Photoshop and see that there are burned highlights, go back and reconvert it darker. Lastly, there is a lot of green in the blacks, surely reflected from the foliage. Go to Selective Color, go to the blacks, and move the magenta slider to the right.

ps: After seeing that this was a crop, I would love to the the whole image.

Yes Artie the bird is eating the apple. The histogram shows that the whites are not burnt out. Should I still recovert darker? Do you think the image needs warming up? I cropped the image because the bird appears a little to centered. I will try the selective color adjustment. Thanks for the critique.

I really like the unusual setting. The whites appear on the hotter side maybe because of the color cast. You may try desaturating the crest a bit as it looks a bit hot.

The whites do look a bit bright on my screen too, Amazing setting for this bird.. The bird looks a tiny bit soft to me too... Love it!

Ted, If the histogram shows OK on the whites, do NOT convert darker. Select the whites either with a Select Color or better yet with a Quick Mask (you will not have to feather) and then Multiply that layer. That will make the whitess denser which is good, and much greyer, which is bad. Now go to the Opacity slider and move it till you are happy with the compromise.
