A 36mb tIF. - WHAT'S IN IT?

I wondered if anybody knows what is contained in an 8 bit 36mb tif. file that is not in a 12 bit 18mb RAW file? Why has Nikon given us this format?

Bill,

The TIFF will have camera settings such as WB, sharpness, and others applied. With the RAW the same settings are applied but only to the thumbnail and embedded JPEG.

So nothing is in the TIFF that is not in the NEF file.
