I just love the way they tilt their heads when curiosity gets the best of them.

The look is great. You have some fantastic lighting here. But I feel you have over used the shadow highlight tool. The side lighting effect is lost here. Also. some noise is seen in those areas. The gradual change in the background adds to the image here. I would love to see the original image without the re-touch. Owls are one of my favourite subjects and it's always a pleasure to see their images.
One great shot, I love thr sidelight, agree with Sudhir about the S&H retouch, but overall I just love this shot, BG is grat, perch is amazing, and the head turn is such a plus! Congratulations!
:)
That head tilt with an inquisitive look makes this image for me. U've got some lovely light out there. TFS.
You gotta love that pose !!! Excellent timing Rob. Congratulations.
beautiful image., a little mouse squeeks go a long way with this owl!
That is one cool pose, Rob! I'd select the Owl's right upper side and lighten it a bit. I'm enjoying you posts very much :)
Maybe this is a stupid question, but how does one find owls? I have never seen one in the wild, let alone take a picture of one...I live in the Mid-Atlantic where there are LOTS of trees and forests....
Chris
Chris, you have Barred Owls, Great Horned Owls, Screech Owls and some others in Maryland but most are nocturnal in your area. Much harder to find. The Great Grey, Hawk, Snowy and Burrowing owl can be very diurnal and thus easier to find. I suggest you go to a nice area in the evening especially in the spring and just listen for their calls then try to track them down.
Well, you really do learn something new every day. I thought ALL owls (without exception) were nocturnal, which made me even more amazed at how you get the lighting in some of your photographs. Looks like I will be hanging around the edges of forests in the future...
