Excellent pose and background Lance. Image is very sharp considering the 2x.

Nice detail on the animal but the broken limb in the BG is rather distracting. I think if you softened up the overall BG and brought the contrast down it would really help put the attention back on the meerkat.

    Good pose Lance,
Need to diffuse the background. It takes away from your subject. The diagonal wood logs stand out too much...

Lance, I have always wanted to see a meerkat...what a poor fella. Agree with reducing contrast.

agree with you about the zoo thing. went to one recently and saw some owls caged up and felt real bad that they couldnt live a normal life. several sandhill cranes looked real ragged in the environment. pitiful! love your capture here. it really tells a story. technical aspects covered well above. thanks for sharing this one!

One of my favorite little guys !!! Got to love that pose and expression !!!

Zoo images are tough due to the time and setting. Not much you could have done from your vantage point !!!

Poor little guy looks so forlorn. I agree about the BG. When it is too close it is hard to get good bokeh
My only other suggestion would be to lighten the eyes and perhaps sharpen a little and maybe saturate modestly?, but leave the catchlights as are.
    Great Title:)
