My Rufous' are back also. He's not quite as vibrant as Gus' because I didn't use a flash. Here's the info:

Well, there is nothing wrong with not using flash (I haven't either). Not saying that's the best way to go though ;)
It looks like the dynamic range of the scene is way beyond what your camera can handle. The blown highlights look too bad here. It appears there's dark halo surrounding the hummer, too. I'm not talking about HA cuz some of mine kind of look like yours :D Details are there though.

on my screen seems to be lacking a little detail - maybe because of the harsh light.
Ditto the halo that desmond refers to.
To pull them off you need the help of the flash. Will allow you to stop down and still have good detail in the frontal area. Just great pose and head angle. Will have lots of fun with them!!!
Thank you all for the comments. Must admit to being hopeless (at this point) with the flash. I've read the high-speed sync flash article in the learning forum, and still can't seem to get it right. When using the flash I either get a lot of hot spots or tone it down so far that nothing seems to happen. Having said that, I shall perservere as I know I need to master it to get better.
