I some how don't like the lower branch of the dead tree as it creates another frame where the eye is led into the empty water. However, a vertical composition removing the left lower branch works well. I think, you could have gone for some more depth of field.

Hey nice one Ed. Good work.

The pose is great the stump perch is just super, I love it. The only negative for me is something I cant say for sure, the sharpness or contrast could be better maybe, the details in the Heron arent what you would expect from a 300F2.8. I used to stop down some with this combo, it seems to help with sharpness when compared to the straight lens of with the 1.4x. Was it a big crop?

    Thanks guys. Appreciate the comments.

Sabyasachi, I made a series of images vertically and with some of them I cut off the branch to the left. I ended up trashing them all because I just didn't like the look. I much prefer the presence of the full stump.

Ironically Robert, this was cropped from vertical to horizontal. I was making vertical images because there were some very nice reflections on the water. But the reflection disappeared with this particular series so I cropped horizontally. The image was cropped from 2336x3504 to 2248x1786.

I have a tendency to oversharpen so I backed off here. I added a bit more sharpening and contrast to this image. I'm not sure its any better.

I like the light, pose and setting in this one. It is a bit tight in the frame for my taste and sharpening more was a good idea, I would only sharpen the bird more since the perch looks a bit oversharpened now. I would also apply some curves and/or S/H to get more details in the shadows.
