I could certainly use some thoughts and guideance on my flower shots. This rose was part of a gift bouquet. I made the capture in my small studio using 2 blue daylight bulbs through umberellas. details are:
Canon 40D
Canon 100 2.8 Macro
F/18 @ .4 sec
Bogen tripod with Giottos ball head
Mirror lockup if I remember correctly
Although not seen, the background material was black
Hi Dave,
Excellent composition , image and exposure. I like the hues in the whites and the texture. I also like the vertical composition...congrats. Were you using burst strobes on demand, or did you use regular modeling lights, daylight balanced like a flood setup. White or silver umbrellas?
The lamps were two 500 watt continuous floods which are blue daylight balanced tungsten. The umberellas are white translucent, Shooting through instead of reflected (to soften light as much as possible). I have never had the pleasure of working with strobes. I appreciate your thoughts as I am a fan of your floral and studio work.
Particularly like the texture, great lighting work !!! Not sure if is possible but would like to see the darker sections a little lighter? Might turn the area to mush? Very appealing and beautiful !!!
Hi Dave, your rose is gorgeous! I've haven't done any macro work so I won't even try to comment on your techs. I love the texture and do not think it's too warm.
Thank you Alfred and Katie for the encouragement. I might try to mess with the dark area to see if I can open it up just a touch. This site has been a huge help for me. Just received Robert O'tooles APTAT disc. Hope to improve my bird shots a bunch.
