Hey, Mike, alot of our summer birds have left their nesting areas now and I'm having much more trouble locating good subjects, so I too have been doing alot of non-bird macro! I think macro is alot of fun. I also love the thistles and their seeds!! I'm no pro, but I think maybe that focusing in either on the purple flower or the seed thing here might be better? The fluffy seed things can be tough to get a good exposure on because the sun causes the highlights to easily blow out, but I love them! Remember that in macro, you must have absolute stability of your camera/tripod, etc. MUST use tripod, weight it down with a beanbag or something if possible....if you have a remote shutter release, use it, and mirror lockup won't hurt either. Have fun!

Hi Mike Great advice from Anita Very solid !!!

Can add for the release you can use the self timer in four seconds, works well. For this image I would darken the RL corner, light areas do not work well in those areas. For your main subject you wanted defined, here I'm not sure which of the two is the main. Would probably try a composition with only one.

When composing figure out what you need as far as dof. Some you want as much as possible but for other wide open to blur the bg. Would try some of each on same subject and evaluated later in the computer. Can also purchase flowers and photograph indoors !!! Looking forward to more flowers.

thanks to you both. i tried, myself, figuring out what the focal point would be for this photo and ended up that the green blur was the actual focal point. i'll try for better composition and i think i will purchase some flowers (i'll tell my wife they are for her). i do use a tripod for this work and will use the off camera shutter release, especially if i buy some and have time to go back over the piece several times to get the best angle and comp.
    thanks again, mike
