Not a great shot maybe, but I like the pose, the green Woodpecker is peaceful. I chose to have it in my new book, a page/spread (the other page is text) where you can rest.

I like the contemplative pose and the reflection. The sidelighting is not ideal, causing shadowing on the birds face. I think that lightening just the eye in the shadowed side will improve the image. Wish the bird had cleaned his muddy bill before his photo op.

Very striking composition and I love the reflection and the intense pose captured here. Agree with Lindas comments on the clean beak and eye contact . Really love the richness of this image Brutus. Lovely work !!!

I'll be odd man out, I like the gunked up beak, love the colors and reflection, but the messy beak somehow make him more grounded for me.

I had some thoughts about the beak and that it's "messy". But making a book, there is a story to tell too. I found that the beak was telling us something about the woodpeckers behaviour, his food etcetera, which a totally clean beak would not have done. Estetically a clean beak could be nice, but it would also be less interesting, more boring (only perfect) - that's how I thought about it.

If I knew as less about birds as I did just a few years ago, I would have choosen a photo with a clean beak. Probably! In this partical case, the green woodpecker - as all birds - has to clean himself, both to look good (in front of a female, or the opposite) and to get rid of the bacterias (or what you would say in English). But the interesting thing with the green woodpecker is that it also uses ants for this purpose, so it digs after ants in the mud with its beak to use them in the cleaning process. In addition the green woodpecker actually also eats the small pups (baby ants, I don't have the word in English) which it finds in the mud/dirt.

I hope you don't mind me telling about the criterias I used for this photo when dhoosing it for the book was working with. I think it's so interesting to see the different aspects you can imply on a photo.

    Thanks very much.;)

I absolutely agree with you about the choice. Yes, this image tells us a lot of things about the woodpeckers behaviour. May I add that I like the image a lot?;)

I guess we can always say we wish certain elements were different or better in most of our images to make them perfect, but it is what it is. That said, I really love the look and feel of this image, not perfect, but that's okay. Very well done, thanks for sharing it with us.
