I am starting to practice flash photography with my 40D and a 580EXII and Better Beamer. This morning I set the flash exposure compensation on the 40D to -2 (the FEC range on the 40D is only +/-2) and still had significant "overflash" (with ETTL mode and HiSync). How can you further reduce flash output?
An indirect way I found was to reduce the ISO. This effectively shortens the range of the flash. Thoughts?
As the BB increases the maximum reach of your flash by approx. 3 times, the closest possible distance is as well increased by 3 times. If you are very close to your subject, the BB might be to strong.
Hi John.
I am working on the BB at the moment, know what you mean.
I am exposing the 40D on manual and setting the 580ex flash to high speed sync, zoom at 50mm, flash compensation at minus 2 to minus 3. Camera exposure if exposing from the sky run at over comp between 1 and 1-2/3, if exposing from the grass run at under comp abt minus 2/3. Highly recommend Artie's CD. Arthur Morris, The art of bird photography 2.
Russell, how do you set the flash exposure compensation of the 40D to -3???? I do basically everything else the same (manual camera exposure & metering, HSS, zoom at 50 mm etc.) but to the best of my knowledge you can't expand the FEC on the 40D from +/-2. Do you set FEC on the 580EX flash? Thanks, JR
You set the external 580ex flash unit to -3, read page 14 in the manual for the flash unit, as a starting point. Then adjust the exposure comp in the 40D to minus or plus to suit for good exposure.
Get back to me if you have any queries.
Regards,
Russell
