This Juv. Burrowing Owl was one of 6 that were living in this "burrow" at an abandon gas station site in a shopping center parking lot. Photographed wayyyyyy back in 1986 from a car window mount, on K64 (film!)with a Minolta camera and Tokina 400mm lens at f5.6, unfortunately the rest of the shot info is lost in the dust!
Freshly scanned (some of the dust was found here!!!!) with an HP Photosmart and processed in CS3.

This made me smile. :) Not a place where I would expect to find a burrowing owl.

Film! I have some of that collecting dust here too, and often think of scanning some things in. Especially after my husband gave me a "hint" by getting me a Nikon film scanner.... Looks like another project to me! (hehehe, he thinks that means I'll throw away the boxes of negatives... )

Your owl made me smile as well. Definitely worth the effort of dusting off the picture. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Really cool Dan, (both the image and your name:)). Do you know if they were hatched there? Different indeed..

What a unique shot! A great composition. I can just imagine the fender-benders in the parking lot, of people trying to dodge this obstacle!

Thanks all for the comments. Dan, I do believe that the owls were born here. Here's a shot of some of the siblings standing around the hole, shot using a camera mounted on a table top tripod with a 28mm lens and a 20 foot electonic cable release (Hi tech back then!!).

I love it......the perfect protection for those little ones. Did you ever enter this in a contest? It sure looks like a winner to me.

Dan thanks for sharing this interesting image and story. Nature seem to endure sometimes even in the most inhospitable habitat.
