This hummingbird was having a bad hair (umm - feather) day and was not too happy with having it's photo taken :)

    Nikon D80
    Nikon 80-200 AF-D + 1.4 TC
    ISO 400 f/6.7 1/200 sec
evaluative metering -1/2 eV EC, on camera flash used

This is a big crop (~60%) but I think the details held up OK.

I like the eye contact and the crop holds up well. The eye looks a bit overflashed and I find the flower in the upper right a bit distracting.

Looks like pretty harsh light that you handled well. I agree that the URC is a bit distracting.

He really does look annoyed. A hummingbird sitting still - wow. I must not have good vision, because I don't think I've ever even actually SEEN a humming bird in "real life". I love this - and the background flowers don't bother me. They're a bit distracting, but bright flowers and hummingbirds seem to go together....

Thanks for sharing his bad "feather" day!

I'll have to disagree with some of the early commenters and say that I think the red in the background works well. The only problem is that the bird is slightly dull compared to the very rich, saturated colors in both the fore and background.

Very nice pose and expression. I like this!

Thanks for all of the comments. Here's another version with the colors pumped up a bit more.
