Hi Folks,
Sorry to give you yet another of my Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands efforts - I've decided to enter their annual photography competition so get critiquing....:D:eek:
400D 100-400 @400
ISO 200
AV F8 1/320 sec

Large crop, added canvas to the right, levels, sharpening.
Best regards to all,
Nicki
The dramatic lightening works well for this portrait Might only lighten the dark area in front of the eye.
For these type I have a strong opinion on the eye placement. It dominates the image and would place it in one of the intercepting thirds. There are exceptions to this rule (actually guide) but will post below for comparison. While making the image I will try compose for the selected crop. You "will" do well in the competition !!!! btw fine looking pochard !!!!
btw would even like it better a little forward and right !!! My crop does look a bit goofy but just wanted to illustrate the eye placement
a little something in between yet keeping the eye close to the ROT intersecting lines. i think i know what you were after here, nicki. i do like the original a lot. i think anyway you slice it you have a winner!!!
Thanks so much for your kind comments and suggestions. Harold, I think that you are right about the happy medium. Al, I completely understand what you are saying about the rule of thirds but I must admit that I tend to work more on instinct - I just know when I like it and when I don't - can't explain it!!
Regards,
Nicki
I like your image a lot!!! Know what you mean about just knowing what you like and working on instinct. I also understand and appreciate Al's point on the eye placement - I sure wish I could think ahead far enough to compose for my intended crop!!!!:D Congrats on a fine looking image.
Lady Nicki,
You just might have yourself a winner here. My best wishes that you take the photo competition by storm. Agree with Mr. Forns techs. and like Mr. Harold's repost. No nits from me. You have a lovely image. GO FOR IT...
Way to go Nicki! I love your image.... I like both reposts. Wish I knew more about which crop is best, they both look great to me. Best of luck, I know you have a winner.
