These little guys are very shy and I was lucky to catch him coming up for a look.

Looks good Bill and nailed the point of focus Not easy with that bg !! Would go for more of a pano and sure wish you had the rest of the critter in frame !!!

Thanks Al, you know I always appreciate your critiques. On this one I had to make a judgment call. In order to keep the subject this size (which I thought was important) I either had to crop the shell or have him/her headed out of the frame. If I had seen a tail on the end of the shell that might have made me go your way.

Your GBH workshop photo makes me wanna go - But I spent all my money on the dark side. That's your fault. :)

Nice, Bill, good placement in the frame and exposure. Good focus point too :)

Hi Bill, these guys can be really shy for sure! Good job getting this close. I'm with Al regarding the framing...and would like to add that using another focussing point, might help you getting the head off-centered (which would have left more room for the rest of the body).

Thanks Jasper - It was one of of those situations like when you startle a sleeping female lion in the brush - you just hold real still. :)

In hindsight I guess I could have added canvas - duh.

Would have liked to see the entire turtle in the fame, that would also have placed the head close to a power point improving the comp. . Not easy but by using rear button focus you can focus and recompose quickly...
