This shot is intended more as a study in light and texture than as a document of the beast.:) So I'm hoping I have come close to that goal, or maybe I've just gone in the wrong direction:confused:. I'm here to learn so I am always open to thoughts.

I think the bright areas could be brighter and the shadow areas could be opened up a bit to show more details. It could also use more sharpening to emphasize the texture. It looks kind of soft on my monitor and I'm assuming you're not showcasing the softness of the skin of this Hippo :)

I think your going in the right direction. Agree with Desmond on the light/shadows

Thanks for the advice . So now I've opened up the shadows and was careful not to overdo the highlights. I've also added a touch more unsharp mask. So am I heading in the right direction? It seems to show more detail to me. Maybe you were saying to just dodge the shadow area. At any rate the corrections do seem better to me. More Thoughts???

I like it Dave Tight compositions sure work well Would try placing the eye on one of the intersecting thirds Sort of looks out of place there?

I like the original better than the repost Agree on lightening some but not as much Don't want to loose the mood Did a slight curves adjustment and then lighten the eye just a bit. Also a touch of sharpening.

Great crop on this one. I like it as presented.
