    Default Gila Woodpecker

I photographed this Gila Woodpecker on the grounds of the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum on a trip with my son last year. Fantastic place to visit, especially when they are doing the raptor free flight show. The male Gila woodpecker is a beautiful bird, and this one was no exception. Eye contact could have been better, but I thought there was enough to make the shot.

Beautiful capture Doug and the pose is very nice. Just a little different from the norm. I agree a little more catchlight would be nice but great as is.

You did well with the direct overhead lighting. Love the BKGR. Moving a bit to your right would have been an option.

I got a little lucky there. I didn't have to do any highlight recovery in post-processing, and the angle of the sun helped bring out the red up top.

    Hi Doug,
Nice detail and a very complimentary colored BG for this bird.

Here's a revision with a more prominent catchlight.
