It's mid-winter down here, but this male Superb Fairy-wren has moulted into his breeding plumage. These are very common birds in south-eastern Australia. Image taken on a heavily overcast day.

Canon 40D, EF500 f/4 + 1.4 tc, blubb beanbag from car window, ISO800, 1/125, f5.6, evaluative, vertical crop from horizontal, a couple of grass stems cloned out.

Like it a lot Simon. Excellent sharpness and eye contact. I think there's a little more detail in the blacks. Here's a repost in which I adjusted the shadows. How do you like it?

Thanks Doug - Yes there is more detail - how did you achieve that?

I used the quick select tool to highlight the dark black areas and created a new layer via copy. Then I used Shadows slider to bring out detail in the blacks.

Nice pose Simon, I just wish they were very common, around Sydney where I live they are quite a rare site these days.:(

    Cheers

You must be living in the wrong part of Sydney! :)
