Well Alfred's advice helped a bit and I almost got the shot I really want. This one comes close but still not what I really dream off.
I still found that with either single point focus, or dynamic 9 points, the point of focus was always behind the pika. Manual focus is darn near impossible on these guys, too many variables and directions for them to go.
So I'm still a bit stumped on how to consistently get sharp action shots with an animal that doesn't run/fly in a straight path when its coming at you.

Nice shot Jared,
Pretty darn close and a definite keeper until you get the one you're really after. I read that post and think your best option with these constantly bobbing and weaving critters is manually prefocusing on a point and getting lucky in burst mode. Looks like a miniature bear and I like the bee in the LLC.

A lower angle, if at all possible, would have given you a better sense of movement.
I keep my focus lock on OFF for faster acquisition. Try it, if you liked short, Off may be the one for you!
BTW, try faster than 1/800, 1/1600 if the light allows.
Love the action here. You captured well. Pkia's often travel the same routes. By watching them you can find photogenic spots and prefocus and just wait for your opportunity.
