    Default Slice of Silver

One of my potted gerberas is in bloom again after a long summer of being stagnant. This one is normally pale yellow in color. I made a couple of images this evening and then played around a bit after I processed this one in "ordinary fashion."

This second version has a silver gelatin filter over the top, adding just a bit more depth than a normal black and white conversion. I did a curves and levels adjustment as well and I believe I threw in a blending mode or two towards the end as well.

Here it is...the golden yellow flower turned silver.

You really got the texture to show, Jules, and the drama of the black background sets it off extremely well.

    Hi Jules,

This is really striking, One reason is the way that the bloom sits - as if it's leaning over to let the petals tumble to the ground....

I'm not sure it would have the same impact in "living color". I like the effect.

Amy, I posted a color version in the macro forum if you want to go take a look. I ran a poll on my photoblog and it was 5 to 2 in favor of the silver/b&w version so I guess you're right! I really liked the way the bloom was opening up, too...thought it gave it a little bit of added interest.

    Hey Jules -
I just saw the post in Macro, and yeah - I think I would have voted for the silver/B&W version, too, although they are both great. Something about this reminds me of being in photojournalism class and learning to print BW in the darkroom. Different paper yielded different contrasts, etc.... This is like an example of what we were striving for....

Nicely composed, simple and elegant. I like the texture rendered in the flower. The black background puts this over the top. good show...
