Default Found the bag for 500mm w/ body

I was searching for cases or bags for my Canon 500mm stored with a body attached (5D or 1DsIII). After weeks of finding no camera bag just right for this combo, I wandered over into the video bag department and saw the Kata camcorder cases. Well, camcorders are long and not wide, so their model CC-193 fit the bill nicely.

I like to have the long boy ready with a body on it while driving, and since I am often off-road and bouncing, I needed something I can keep next to my seat for quick access. I've lost too many opportunities because of the time lag of putting together the right rig. Hope this helps anyone!

Just out of curiosity, did you ever check out the Kinesis L511 Compact Long Lens Case 500. It is supposed to handle a 500 with hood reversed and body attached. I have the 300 version which handles my Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS with a 2X TC and body attached. Nice bag.

Anpther bag that handles the 500 plus a body (and lots more) is the "Airport Think Tank Seurity". Really a rolling suitcase, but can be kept in the truck and used for travel as well.

    My solution is this:

I bought at Walmart a tennis bag that holds 4 rackets (2 compartments) I padded both inside with menory foam (twin size mattress pad size) and now I have room for cameras with lenses attached 300 F2.8 with hood attached & extender and 500 f4 with hood reversed & extender and room for accessories on the side pockets.. I like it because it has zippers open all the way.. so the camera is easy to get to. For rest I use the Think tank airport securty case to carry 17" laptop also

I would worry about the loaded weight relative to the original design intent of the tennis bag. Did you have to reinforce strap attachments or anything like that? Would love to see an image of this! Thanks.

    Jeffery,

Thanks for the tip on the Kata CC-193. It's what I've been looking for - something with quick access and will ride on the seat when off-road.

    Have a blessed day - dave b.

another great bag is the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW. It handles camera body + lens + hood for combos up to 600mm f4.

I own the Lowepro Lens Trekker as well. My beef with it is that it is a single-purpose pack, i.e., no meaningful space for other lenses. My LowePro Apex 300, will accommodate the 1D M3+500mm plus several other lenses and accessories (but not the Canon lens hood, for which I have substituted my own flexible neoprene lens hood).
