    Default Common Loon Portrait

Itasca County, MN - 1D3, 500mm+1.4xTC, hand held from boat, 1/2000, F6.3, ISO 800, manual exposure

I grew up in Minnesota and the Loon, which is the Minnesota state bird, has always been one of my favorite birds. Until last week I had never had a chance to photograph them. There is something very special about sitting in a boat on a beautiful calm lake listening to the calls of the loons. The loons were very friendly and came very close to us allowing portraits like this one.

Excellent shot, capturing the very wise dynamic range of this bird.

Ditto Jim! Loons reach right down to the very heart of your soul. Love the tight crop and colors on the loon. Not to fond of the upper background, but you still made out. Keep them coming.
