Stacked converters 1vHS and EF 600/4. Provia (outdated) pushed to 200. In cold winter weather at Plum Island I was experimenting with outdated film. This bird was first seen siting about 100 yards away (close for PI's marshes). It took of abruptly and glided to a set of staddles 150 yards further out. To my surprise the stacked converters auto focused. This is cropped quite a bit, but IMO this adds to the mystical quality of a hunter settling in as dusk descends. If I have a favorite image this is probably it, and I'm happy to make it my first post.

Sorry - as I repeated my attempt to upload I saw a reference to my attachment which didn't appear the first time I clicked "uploaad".

Hi - I like the sunlight through the out stretched wings and the overall fell to this image.

Think it needs a little bit of CCW rotation :)

    Welcome, Stephen
An interesting first post....and with film. I like the colors and the light coming through the wings......giving it a nice mood. I agree about the CCW. I like the image but I wonder if you could also do a pano of this one.....giving you yet another perspective. I played with it a bit......cropped to pano, CCW rotation, sharpened bird/posts and blurred the rest a bit to remove noise. I also used levels a bit to actually darken the midtones...thus highlighting the bird. I like the original...especially with the beautiful colors but wanted you to see how you can change an image. I hope you don't mind.

    Big Welcome Stephen !!!!

Excellent image and love the re post by Lana !!! Lots of feel and love the composition with the fence Only the bird having its head up would have improved it.

btw when stacking converters try pre focusing since you will have a great dof at that distance. Interesting that the AF speed seems to be even a little faster with the 500 vs 600 Not sure why !!! Big Congrats on this one !!!!

Thanks everyone for your comments, help actually. The thought of CCW rotation stems from the impression the blue at the top gives that it is the horizon. I agree that diminishing the size of the blue band at the top i.e., going pano, helps a great deal. Here's my own pano -- It keeps somewhat more of the foreground and makes the staddles (pieces of cedar places in the marsh many, many years ago to keep the tides from hauling away salt marsh hay) from looking like a fence. BTW I'm glad you seem to like the image. I certainly do. What challenges me most is setting levels - and levels that go well to the web. On my monitor this image looks one notch darker than I'd really like.

Best to all, this is a great forum.
