A beautiful subject for sure. Could use more contrast and more room in front for the bird to "walk" in to. The toe-drag in the water is neat.

Like the pose and eye contact Rick! Agree with Daniel about more room. I would adjust the black point, reduce noise, and tone down the red in the iris a bit.

Love the big red eye but not the foggy look. Needs lots of work on Levels, Contrast, and on the blacks.

Thanks everyone. I will change my contrast setting on my camera back to normal and try to get the color and contrast and cropping better then what I have been doing.

    Rick,

#1: your image is coming up as a red X.

#2: Unless you are using JPEG capture (which we do not recommend) then you are lacking some basic understanding. My understanding is that if you change the contrast settings on your camera that that change only affects the JPEGs but not the RAW files...

Once you convert the RAW image you bring it into Photoshop to be optimized. There, Levels, Curves, and Selective Color adjustments would eliminate the foggy look of your post.

I do recommend that you check out our Digital Basics PDF. :)

    No image here either!
Artie, as far as camera settings go with raw files if Rick is using acr for raw conversion you are correct about no effect but if he is using capture nx all camera settings are applied during conversion although they are changeable.

I use NX2, and yes in camera settings are applied when opening in nx, I do not always use them. I look at the shadows lost and the highlights lost, under view, to adjust the opacity of the contrast settings applied. I use the in camera settings as only a guide for out in the field, viewing the LCD. Rick should be looking at those things in nx, much more than in camera settings. But, if he is shooting Jpegs, all bets are off.

Rick I would give the advice that RAW is the way to go!!! Adjustments in nx are so easy, once you get use to them. Remember, the NEF has something like 4,000 more bits of information than the jpeg.
