    Default Morning Light

This was taken near Page, Arizona just at sunrise. I haven't had much success with landscapes but I'm working at it and I think this one has merit, I like the way the sunlight just kisses the foreground rocks with the same color as the formations in the background. So, does it work? I'm eager to hear your comments and advice. Thanks for looking!

very cool image katie!! i like the way the foreground rocks on the left point you towards the center of the frame. it needs a tick of clockwise rotation and maybe a little darkening of the sky would help out to. nice compo!!

This really is lovely, Katie. I just got one of those 10-22 lenses myself and its a lot of fun, bringing the world of wide angle back to my 30D (which I use principally for wildlife so the high crop factor is really useful).

Although landscapes are not my strong suit either I'll give it a go.

You got a really nice composition working for you and you chose a very appropriate depth of field (DOF should be at least f16 and you chose f22 so bravo!) I love the light on the foreground rocks - you'd lose that in a pano but it would still make for an interesting image because of the lines of color across the background (BG).

That said, I think my only little issue is just how red the red rocks are. You might go in and try to selectively tone down the reds just a bit and see if that doesn't give them more of a natural look. Don't drop them down too much because they really are nice with the sky colors - but a slight drop might make them get some of the detail back.

I love the blur that the sky has where it meets the BG - is that all natural or did you do a little post-processing blur in that area? If you did it in pp, good for you as it looks really natural!

Thank you all, and Julie---I purposely blurred and noise reduced the sky. I'll work on the reds and try the pano. I really like the foreground as is but I'll be interested in seeing the pano effect.

Fantastic image, Katie. I disagree with Julie's remark about the red on the rocks. When I saw the photo and where it was from my initial thought was that someone finally caught the red of the rocks just right! It is amazing how red those rocks can be when hit just right in the early morning light. I would not change it.

Katie, I think you really have an eye for landscape composition. This is so pretty and I think it's because of the colors. Nice job on the post-processing, too.
