Default Insect: Identification, Behavior and Nomenclature

Well, I couldn't exactly post this in the Avian forum, so I didn't know where to put it - it's not really for critique, but more curiosity. This wasp is on a blade of grass in the middle of the river. My husband found him, and wanted to know what he's doing, so I said I'd post it and ask. He seemed unconcerned (the wasp, not my husband) :) by my paddling around trying to get the kayak in the right position to take the picture - even when I almost ran over his grass....

It appears to me he's eating a grub of some kind that had been munching on the grass.... ?? Icky, but potentially beneficial.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Amy D.

Hi Amy, I don't know what this is but it's a really good shot, handheld? from a boat! wow! I couldn't resist working on it to increase the sharpness and reduce the foggy look. I adjusted the levels a little, did a linear curves layer, added some blacks with a selective colors layer, then sharpened. These adjustments added a little noise to the BG, so I reduced it back with Noise Ninja selectively. Good luck on the ID!

Wow Dan, Thanks! It looks awesome. I didn't want to push it too far - still kind of getting used to post processing, but you really brought it out!

Thank you, now maybe it's worthy of the Macro forum.

Alfred - do you think the folks on the Post Processing forum would be interested in Dan's update and information? If so, feel free to move the thread.

    :)

When I first posted, I'd just done some minor adjustments in Lightroom, but after Dan's post, I decided to try my hand in Photoshop.

Here's what I came up with....

Your repost looks great Amy! It's good to do the adj. on the original, assuming that's what you did here. BTW, your welcome on my redo, it's good practice for me and I can't resist on some images (good ones!) to see them optimized. Dan Brown

Thanks Dan, I'll post it to the Macro forum. I hadn't even thought about it before. Yes - I did edit it from the original. I was amazed what you got out of it based on my .jpg, though. I might have to go revisit a few other pictures I've passed over....

Thanks Harold. I looked at the bugguide. Wow! All those bugs!

So far, this looks promising. I think the one in the picture is male - maybe mine is a female?

This would be a Polistes fuscatus - the expert on one of the posting on the site said that he had mistaken them for Cicada Killers before - so that would fit with your first suggestion.

    Thanks for the help!
