Default Tripod and Head for Macro

I do lots of landscape and macro photography as well as bird photograph with 100-400 IS lens. I use the Gitzo tripod with Linhof head and Novoflex MiniConnect plate. I am frustrated with this setup which I have been using for many years. I would like to find a plate and head that would hold my 100mm lens firmly while doing macro. I also don't like the knob for tightening the head. Any suggestions?

Hi Joanna I use something similar but works well and its smooth For a ball head I think Really Right Stuff makes the best ones Either the model 55 or 40

You can get either with a quick release Arcca type plates The head is as smooth and a joy to work with. Might look around in that site ... lots of interesting things btw for extreme macro they have a killer set of focusing rails !!!
