Well, I didn't quite get close enough for a macro shot of the eyeball, but then, he was pretty big!

I like the placement of the eye but wish for a bit more room below the teeth. Had you move to your right you would have been better able to parallel the subject. In other words, the head angle is off...

    Thanks for your comments, Artie,

Unfortunately, there was no place to go farther right. I see what you mean - the shot is a little behind parallel. I had my kayak beached in reeds on the bank of the river with no place else to go. On the OTHER side of the Alligator, I had a better angle, but from there, was shooting into the sun. I have a shot using fill flash, but it didn't have the light filtering through that eye....

It seems you were quiet close. The eyes are nicely placed. I agree with Artie regarding the head angle and teeth. It gives me some interesting ideas to implement in my next crocodile trip.

Yes, I was pretty close. When they are sunning on a log, as this one was, they will remain pretty still - but wary, and it's possible to get pretty close as long as you don't knock something that vibrates their log, or do a lot of paddle-waving to get into position. They're really not interested in us - unless they have babies nearby.

I have no idea whether this is a female, but farther downstream, we found 3 babies in some hyacinths, and I tried a couple of shots but wasn't set up right - and couldn't beach myself without scaring them. As it was, one was scared off, and the other 2 began their little "Mama" cries, so I didn't take my time adjusting for another shot.... :-) I just let the current go ahead and carry me away.
