Default Areas around Anchorage, Alaska in September?

My daughter has an opportunity to go to Anchorage, Alaska for a week or two in September. Does anyone have any suggestions on some good photo sites in that area at that time?

    Thanks!

What kind of photo sites are you looking for? I'll also be in and around Anchorage with buffer days around a Katmai bear photo trip. I too would be interested in interesting places. Some things I know: the drive south from Anchorage (toward Seward) has a lot of tide action and can be very scenic (called the Turnagain Arm), especially early morning in September. If one wants to photograph moose, there is a hike with pretty much guaranteed moose (east of Anchorage--I'll need to look up the name if your are interested), but in my opinion, not very scenic area as the moose are in a forest with a lot of dead brush:

(note the focal length was 28-135 mm), so you get close (I actually almost bumped into this guy but that's another story--he was as startled as I was).

South of Anchorage one can visit a glacier, or take tour boats out of Seward. (Anybody done that--any advice--I was thinking of trying this). If you have a couple of days, a trip to Homer can be nice. I think Homer has one of the prettiest settings of any town. You can get some bald eagle photos there in September too.

thank you Roger! sorry for my slow response, for some reason I am not receive notification any longer about threads I have subscribed to, even though I still have that option indicated.

My daughter particularly loves birds, but loves photographing anything. She has never been to Alaska before so everything will be exciting to her. And I don't know the dates yet either. lol

    Thanks for the information, Roger.

Roger, I sent your information to my daughter. She arrived in Anchorage 4:00 a.m. this morning. She said it is "awesome" there, even though it is raining. They went to one of your suggested sites this afternoon---Potter's Marsh. She said she stayed as long as she "could take it" and is now back at her place. She said she couldn't talk long as she had to get her ankle wrapped. Tomorrow she is going out to get different kind of boots. hmmmmmm A mom can imagine a lot of things of what might have happened today.......... Will have to wait for pics or another phone call.

    Hi Cheryl,
I just got back from Alaska. I visited Potters Marsh about a week ago. There were a few birds, but nothing special, and lots of mosquitoes. I did get some nice eagle images in Homer and Seward, and lots and lots of bear pictures and some birds in Katmai. Thousands of images to process.....

Sounds like a great visit, Roger. I forwarded your info on to my dd. Her trip is nearly over, I hope she gets a chance to see some wildlife.
