Taken in Poland 2 years ago, I got to tag along with Jasper and we had the greatest time photographing these raptors. Every morning we would go out on the water with a bucket full of fish and when we were lucky these guys would come swooping in. Sometimes they would come so close that the only thing we could do is watch in awe......Taken in early morning light.

    C & C welcome,

Note the weird feathers again on both sides of the wing, I don't know if you guys remember but I had a similar thing with a shot of mine of a greater white fronted goose. Artie pointed out to me that those feathers were weird looking and that it probably had to do with moulting or malnurishment. Does anybody know anything about this?

Krijn, I would do a duplicate of this post int the Avian ID and behavior, to make sure John can answer and others interested in the topics don't miss it.

Excellent banking pose and great wing detail. Love the fanned tail!

This bird is definitely in heavy molt and this image is definitely fantastic. So, so sharp and full of detail. Was it created as a VERT ORIG?

Great pose, details and eye contact. I would only lighten the shadow on the right wing a bit. Thanks for sharing the story, sounds like fun!

Hey Krijn this is sharp for sure and I love it instead of the fact that the light is a bit harsh but the pose and the eye contact are both fantastic. Different colours in the feathers of the wings are due to the age of the feathers. This bird is moulting and, like most big birds of prey, the moult of the feathers is stepped because if they moult all the feathers at the same time they cannot fly and that is a serious problem for a bird of prey (ducks, on the other hand, moult all their wing feathers at the same time and, during some weeks they are flightless but that is not a problem for an aquatic bird). The darker feathers are new ones and the brown feathers are older. The fading of the color is due to the oxidation of the pigment (melanin) that is almost black when the feather is fresh but after some time exposed to the sun and the rain it becomes brownish. Uhmmmm, I think I am writing too much about feathers… but I love feathers!:D

Thanks a lot for the comments regarding the shot everyone

and to Juan for the explanation about the feathers.
The only thing I dídn't understand was your comment about the light being a little harsh, as this was taken at 8 am during the last week of september.

Artie this was cropped from horizontal to a vertical

    Thanks again for your comments!

Oh my god, I apologize Krijn, you are absolutely right about the light :o. I have to confess that I was at my job writing a long comment on your image and, at the same time, l was trying to listen a fellow in the office talking about our last work day before the hollidays....:)

Cool framing....and very useful comments about the feathers. Regarding the light....I have to admit that it does look a bit contrasty to me as well. Perhaps you cooled it down a bit too much to get that warm-morning-light-feeling.
