Mike, I'm having quite a bit of trouble making out the top half of the chicadee from it's surroundings. I think it might help if you went in and selected the BG (background) and lightened it a bit to get some contrast between it and the bird.
Also, you might try toning down the hot spots on the limb it's standing on. The bird appears to be in focus but it's very hard to tell with the BG being so dark.
Mike its tough making these work with mixed light !!! Best to wait, maybe the bird will jump to a totally shaded spot and you can nail him !!! It also seems to be a significant crop, totally different than the others you have posted.
You did get a good pose and placed him with more room up front which is good !!!
Great pose. A tough bird to get even with a 500 mm lens, much less a 300. The bird looks fairly sharp to me but there's a fair amount of background noise. Did you have to crop much?
yeah Dave i did do a big crop. i got it with lighter bg.
i have trouble getting birds exactly where i want them. i take them where God gives them to me. half the time they are at the actual feeder so i can't shoot until before or after the meal. you guys know my circumstances, i'll get better shots when the leaves start to fall. until then i will only put up pictures that i can glean from the hodge podge of my tree that i think will work here.
don't worry, i'll make every effort to give you my best pics.
