Least Bittern from Anahuac NWR last Monday. It was the first one I have ever seen and was impressed with their ability to navigate through the reeds.

    CC welcome and appreciated.

Congrats on getting a lifer David! You held the whites nicely, especially considering how dark the rest of the image is. Fill flash may have helped here. I think your best focus here is on the wing, not the eye. Also I would remove the blade of grass intersecting the bird. Thanks for posting!

David, I too find least bitterns great to watch. Now, that you know where they are, you can see when they will be in the right light and then watch their habits and such and really get some great images. That is what I have done with the least bitterns at a place I go to all the time. When you get to know their habits and be VERY patient, it will pay off. Also, I have found with them that if you can use f7.1 at least you can get most of their body in focus, or at least the head down to the feet.
