I stepped outside my backyard Sunday afternoon to find this newly fledged sparrow sound asleep in the moat of my feeder! Evidently, the trip from the fence to the feeder had proved to be too taxing so he hunkered down for a nap between the sunflower and safflower seeds.

He was a bit upset upon awakening to find his momma and other birds nowhere in sight and some weird redheaded woman pointing a black box in his general direction. Still, he was nice and posed for quite a few images before deciding to return to the fence and the safety of the bushes - a mere six feet away.

I'm happy to say he made it just fine! :D

I posted on this yesterday morning.......seems I must have hit the wrong button or else it's still floating around cyberspace. I think you did well with the composition......just enough of the feeder to get the idea and a decent BG (sometimes hard to do at feeders). The pose and story are great. I might be tempted to run one small round of USM but I can't decide whether the crispness added would ruin the overall feel of the image or not. Well done.

Lana, I agree on the USM. It looked plenty sharp on my home monitor but it does have a bit of blur on the upload.

Julie: Great image and you didn't have to travel far for it! I think the color of the feeder compliments the colors of the sparrow. It must have been overcast -- the colors are wonderful.

I agree, a very intimate image and I love this composition. I don't think sharpening would help this, he has a bit of a sleepy eyed look to him.

Sweet find, Julie! Does look a bit soft to me....good exposure. I have an old photo of 2 young sparrow fledglings asleep in the sun on the floor of my front deck; they slept there for quite a while. :)
