another attempt using a regular lens to get a close up. hand held.
I think it could have used a shorter DOF that stem behind it is especially distracting, but with this lens F8 is where it is sharpest. So what do you think? Lose some sharpness or have this deeper DOF?

How else could I improve on images like this?

    Thanks!

Cheryl, I think the flower itself is certainly well done. I would have moved a bit to the side and tried to put a little more room between it and the stem, creating the illusion that there was more separation between the two. Also, and this might not have been possible, it would be nice if the stem was straight up and down - echoing the vertical line of the flower.

I don't mind the DOF you chose - it's nice to have a bit of the environment surrounding the flower as long as it isn't overpower and distracting from the image. I do think a different angle would have eliminated the whiter area along the top of the frame, leaving you with a cleaner overall image. Try to keep in mind that when you make an image with a deeper DOF (depth of field) every little thing in the BG (background) becomes a potential distraction and you really have to zero in on it before you click the shutter.

I would suggest taking several images at different apertures and then see what you can do about sharpness in post-processing instead of foregoing the DOF you want your image to have for sharpness in the field.

Fully agree with Jules Great critique !!!

For me the biggest improvement would have been having the leaf right behind out of the image? Does attract !!!

Great critiques from Al and Jules! Cheryl, regarding your point about sharpness or DOF, I think that it really depends on what it is that you want your image to convey, which is what makes photography so personal - and so subjective!!
