On this image I am a bit ambivalent whether I should crop off more of the orchid flower below the bug or not...

Yes, I agree - take a bit off the bottom. Also, I'd clone out the stick that is coming out of his head and the blurred one in the lower left quadrant. I think those two things will really minimize any distractions from your intended subject.
The only thing I would like to see different is the point that Kaushik mentioned about the focus. It would have been great to have the plane of focus more parallel with the Bug's body.
