cool image, al!!!! it looks like one of those ribbon snakes we were shooting at green cay that day with artie!! i like the way the oof snake winds backwards through the frame!! might would tame the light a little in the upper left.

Oh...he's so cute! Perfect DOF, Al...it really works here! I agree that you might want to calm down that ULC a bit but what a beautiful image!!!

The whole image is a classic composition "rules", and you can see how they work here. The snakes body pulls your eye along. I think it helps that the snake appears to be looking down at you.
Why does the sharpness of the focus fall away so fast when you were shooting at f/9? I think the oof areas still work and contribute; I'm just wondering why it happened.

Actually I am going to go out on a limb here --- I may be wrong and am happy to be so......

But .. I think it needs more sharpening. (I don't have my glasses today - so pls don't crucify me :) )

    Applied some more overall sharpening.

    Hope you dont mind AL.

I like it Lance !!!! For the one I had posted only the head was sharpened Like yours better !!! :)

Gail consider the image was made at 1000 mm and the snake was not all that far away ... dof is minimal I close down 1/3 stop for added sharpness wide open would have been f 8.0

Al, you even made it look cute! Think it is smiling at you??
I think I would crop some off the top to bring his face higher--more eye to eye with the viewer, and show off the details in its chin/beneath its head.
