    Hi...

Today I was trying to crawl near some Curlew sandpipers. It was hard... An open area with a small pond. Me, my camouflage mask and my 300 with 1.7 tc went out in the very early morning, before the birdwatchers was out.. Tried to get as near as possible and also wanted the bird out a bit in the water so I did not get a blurry fg and a half mirror of the bird...

This where the best shot I camed up with. What do you think. Do you have any information to share on how to get closer without buying a 600/4 (because then I have to wait a half lifetime)...

Well. Feel free to write :)

    Nikon D80
    AF-I 300/2.8 + 1.7tc = 500/5.6
    Tripod
    Iso 320
    1/160s

I like the idea, angle and water colors. I think it needs a tad CW rotation. The bird looks soft and needs more sharpening and it would be nice to see the eye.

Often it helps if you don't try to approach the birds when they are skittish. Instead you could try to wait, don't move and hope they will get used to you and come closer on their own. I'm not sure if a 2x TC on your lens would get acceptable results.

    Is this better?

You mention the eye. Yes, I understand, but the meaning with the picture is that it is going to look like he is hiding...

I know what you mean. There still is a bit much negative space for my taste. I rotated a bit, sharpened the bird and cropped a bit tighter.

I only sharpened the bird and used 'smart sharpen' in PS, 120, 0.3 and "lens blur"

Excellent job on the repost by Axel. For another take on sharpening JPEGs, check out Pramod's Eurasian Thick-knee post (towards the bottom).

Best suggestion for getting closer without a 600; get rid of the birders... Actually, Axel's suggestion is a good one. CUSA is one of my very favorite birds.
