A common cattle egret but on a slightly different type of perch, in this case a rhino.

Well, that is an unusual 'perch'. And there are even droppings on the rhino's back, seems to be a popular outlook. :) Do they just sit there to be off the ground or is there another reason? I like details and BG, exposure control is good, too. I only wish for a little bit more space on the bottom, but I like it as is and you mentioned it's full frame.

Great shot Geurt, Love the BG and contrast with the texture of the rhino skin. Well done to keep the detail in the white. Where did you get this shot. I try to get back to SA as regularly as possible - it's such a great place for wildlife photos.

Wonderful pose, light, and background! The only thing I'd probably do is work on the Rhino's back a little bit to get rid of the distracting white splotches. Great capture overall!

I really like the way the curve of the egret's back complements the curve of the rhino's back. It's a neat composition, and all the other major elements are excellent. As I've also said before, I'm a sucker for BGs that transition through warm/cool, and this buttery bokeh BG does that nicely.

Here's a case where a second body with a zoom would have allowed further options. As a single image telling a story, a looser composition would have told the story better, while I see this as a valuable tight shot to accompany the environmental. If there was enough time, even pulling off the TC would have allowed this to some degree.

Hmm, thanks a lot for the c&c's.
Axel, I have seen the egrets sitting on rhinos (and ellies) mostly early mornings with lots of dew on the ground. Could be that insects etc are not so active then. Other times of the day, these guys will be all around the mammals to get to any dislodged insects.

whyted, this is at a local nature reserve close to Pretoria. It is something that I have seen at any of our other parks and reserves and I've seen it in Botswana as well. Hope you visit us soon.

Steve, thanks for that and yep I hear and agree with you on a wider composition as well.
