This Marine Iguana was photographed with the 400mm f/4 IS DO lens and the EOS 40D on the Mongoose M3.5.Gitzo 3530 LS combo.

ISO 500. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/80 sec. at f/7.1.

The stuff on the head are salt crystals.

Wow, what an ancient looking creature. The mouth really looks like a smiley. Great BG, too.

Careful ! The claws and teeth are perfectly capable of making you bleed profusely. I had posted some shots of Indian Giant Squirrel shot on the ground. Normally it remains high up in the trees. This Indian Giant Squirrel within minutes was on top of me, happily climbing on my head, shoulders, arms, scratching me, biting my camera strap etc. I stayed calm but its claws were digging into my clothes. Maybe, I should post that shot, don't know which forum.

Coming back to the image, it is nice as usual, as expected from Artie. The salt crystals on the head gives it a kind of prehistoric feel. The wide mouth does resemble a smiley. I am sure it is tough shooting these individuals, as the spikes and texture in its body can make the focus difficult. I would love to see just the close up of the head.

Well, its a treat to watch such species. The salt crystals add to the image.
Hoping to see more such images...
