    Default Camera Recommendation

I have a former student who is leaving next month for Africa (Ghana). This is a year of college study as he's a biology major. He will be studying the diversity of animals along with medical technology. I always did slideshows of my trips in the classroom and he became excited about the potential of photography. He wants to document his year and would like to get some wildlife images if possible while he is there. He will have access to electricity and will have a laptop. He thought his budget would be $400+. I think he just threw that figure out not knowing the actual costs and could spend more if necessary. I suggested that he work on landscapes, portraits, people and their culture and some "birdscapes" or habitat images. I'm giving him my National Geographic Photography Field Guides to get some quick ideas. Having never been to Africa I really don't know what would be good to suggest in that situation. Obviously what he takes with him will be limited in weight and everything will have to be thought out since he will be there for a year. I hesitate suggesting a simple DSLR/zoom lens due to weight/dust, etc. but I'm not sure of what Point and Shoot might be good.....if at all. I also don't want him to have equipment that might put him at risk with theft. I know there can be unsafe areas and knowing him.....and most of my students......they are invincible. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Alfred Forns has a P&S camera that makes great images, I don't remember the model but I would send him a PM in case he doesn't see this thread.

Canon G9 set for RAW + JPEG. In the beginning, the Large Fine JPEGs will be perfectly acceptable but as he gets better, he'll appreciate having the RAW files available. It's less than $500. Add two 2GB SD cards and he's in under $600.

    Hey Lana,

Another vote for the G9. I have seen a bunch of them in use on workshops, exactly for the use you stated above. RAW, AF, and manual focus and exposure, etc. And, the images rock. Of course it is only as good as the user :)

    Best,

    Chas

Hey thanks. I had thought about buying a G9 for myself and have followed and liked that camera through several revisions. I had also thought this would be a good choice for my student and now I feel good recommending it. He is a top of the line biology student.....with a lot of artistic ability. I think he'll do great with it. He's getting a crash course with some books and help from me in the next few days.

I've seen some very high quality images coming from a Panasonic Lumix camera with the Zeiss lens.

    Hi Lana
The G9 has amazing specs including 12.1 megs. Only thing is will there be enough zoom for his needs?
I have an old S2IS which has a handy zoom.
He might like to compare specs of G9 and S5IS on this Canon site:
