I was out looking for Grouse in the hills in Co. Donegal Ireland and I came across this tiny hill loch with two adult and two juvenile RTD. Having read up on them there are between 3-6 Breeding pairs in Ireland so this was really lucky to come up on them. I would have loved to get to loch level but didnt want to disturb them so were taken from about fifty feet above loch with 1d2n Sigma 500 and 1.4 converter.
Great find and good to see that they successfully raised a chick. The angle is a bit steep and due to the distance there is not much detail in the plumage. I hope you will get a chance to see to photograph them up close, maybe a throw-over blind could help.
Unfortunately Axel this is a schedule 1 bird in the UK and I am not sure of its status in the Republic of Ireland, which is where it was photographed. This means one has to have a licence to photograph them on or near the nest. Certainly in the UK there can be substantial fines for non compliance.
