This photograph of the Snail Kite was taken in Florida. I used a Nikon D200 with a 500mm f4 manual focus lens and a 1.4X Teleconverter to capture this image. Camera settings ISO 100, F8, speed 1/400 sec. Please provide me with your critiques. Thanks Aubin

Pose, setting and eye contact look great. The snail adds to it. I wish for a lower angle and the head looks a bit soft. Is this a large crop or did you apply NR?

Axel, I cropped in about 48% on this photo and I didn't apply any NR to this photo. ADubin

Thanks, Arnold. Maybe you could try to selectively sharpen the head.

    Alex,

I tried to selectively sharpen the bird's head more but I can't really see a difference on my monitor. I didn't want got far and over sharpen it. ADubin

    Alex,

The eye on this guys seems soft to me. Maybe you could have popped the ISO a bit and gotten some more shutter speed. I like the comp and the snack is always a plus

There is lots going on here that folks are missing... The eye needed lots of work--as I have been preaching here for a while, I darkened the pupil and de-SATed the red iris. In addition, the throat feathers are wet and scruffy. I cloned out most of the specular highlights on the snail. And finally selectively sharpened the head.

Also cropped from the back as the blue sky there did not add anything to the image. And yes to too steep and angle. Taking a few large steps back would have helped greatly.

    What say you all?

    Hi Arnold,

I would also like to add that this is a little too tight for my taste. It was nice meeting you and I'm glad to see you posting.

    Response to Artie

Artie, I agree with you on the improvements to my photo. I previously worked on sharpening the bird's head and eyes but didn't do it as much as you. I also originally did some dodging on the Snail. The eye I never did anything to de-saturate the red and darken the pupil. I learn something from you all the time. Thanks, ADubin
