Possibly my favorite avian species, the American Avocet. I have spent so many intimate hours with them and find them so full of character.

Here, what I believe to be a male in breeding plumage defending the nest against a couple pesky geese. The bill looks a bit more curved than I might think for a male, however a female was still on the next so perhaps there were two females at that time.

Can't beat the exposure and details - very nice! Pose is great, and the background is wonderful. There is a ton to like here. I might clone out the long/bright line of reflection running down from the foot.

Absolutely beautiful, a real feast for my eyes. Purely from an aesthetic point of view I have to agree the white reflection contrasts rather strongly, maybe a little blending would help prevent the junction.

Really nice, as Jonathan wrote, a feast for my eyes. All works for me, your image makes me more than ever to find this bird in Florida and photograph it. Thanks for sharing, Brian.

Hi Brian....This is sweet....Very pleasing to the eye...Nothing I would change....Really liking the colours and contrast throughout....Perfect pose and HA. The raised foot adds....Yes a photograph that can be looked at for a while...

    Well done

Hey man, quite the beautiful image! Super nice light and resulting vibrant colours. Raised foot and open bill add lots of additional interest. Not much more you could ask for!

Super sharp and super sweet light. The bird, however, is a female. Easy to remember if you think that the ladies have the curves. (Up-curved bills, that is).

I am glad that I called you :-)

Artie, thank you for the reply. I really enjoyed catching up with you :-)

I did make a note in the original text that this appeared to be a female. Glad that you confirmed for me!
