The gull is standing on a sheet of ice, not a common occurrence on an England west coast beach. It was -5 deg C that day and in the night -7 deg C in Wirral.
    Hand held OM-1 300mm f4 & MC14 (840mm FF equiv)

Hi Jon, overall is it grabbing me, sadly no. Perhaps going tighter, say 10x16, the edge of the waterfall I feel is so little it can be cropped and overall the colours a bit muddy, is it leaning towards too much yellow??? The lens also doesn't give that nice bokeh to the backdrop, creating these splodgy patterns, I wonder if you shot it at f/5.6 it might improve as your f/5.6 is more f/8-9????

Steve - afternoon light is was a bit yellow, agree though colours are a little less than crystal clear, I'll take another look but I did several versions and most appeared a bit muddy - do you think that is primarily the yellow ??? The aperture is full aperture with the MC14 but the good news is the 150-400mm should be arriving tomorrow

No, just wrong clothes. Don't wear anything cotton next to the skin when its cold, the worst material.

Yellow can't tell to be honest/or be that precise, only the seeing the raw, should the Gull's legs & bill be more yellow then?

Yes, this is a tough one. I can see the appeal of the ice and grass, but I feel a lower angle would have been better here. The image also needs some CW rotation and what looks like a blob of poop on the ice near the bottom needs to go. The gull itself looks good - sharp, well exposed. A bit similar to our Ring-billed Gulls...which if are the same in out-of-season plumages do indeed have duller legs than during the breeding season so this is likely accurate. Always fun to photograph gulls!!

Thanks Dan, my concentration was primarily on the gull sio I am glad you liked the detail. The orientation is correct, the gull was on a slope, these are sea defences.

Thanks for the explanation of the slope Jon.

I like this one better than the previous ice image. I like how the bird is looking in the same direction as the ice/water appears to be flowing. I'd usually ask for a lower angle, but I kinda like the stripes here.
A gull standing isn't super exciting, so I think the striped lend interest, especially with the wide crop you selected.
