This is one I captured last week at a set up......It wasn't easy, as the distance between the perch and the water was only about four feet....The bird showed approx every hour and I managed a few of the bird diving, and plenty of it perched...Gimbal Head on a plate.......ACR, Topaz DN and PS.

    Hey Will .... kliiier shot
Glad you managed this thingie with a good quality output .
Overall i quite like the presenation .... not 100 % on the composition , to be honest .
    Personally i would prefer a classical 2x3 .

    Great work and TFS

Will, wow man. Pretty spectacular on many fronts!!

The colors are sweet on this handsome bugger. The pose is super unique, and while many really want wings open, this rocks IMO.

Sharpness looks great with plenty of detail on such a super fast diver.

A couple suggestions that you might want to play with to see what effects they have:

    - Maybe some selective dodging on the subjects right side of the face the help it come out from the shadows
    - Darken the bkg some and/or use some vignetting creatively to draw the attention in
    - You could try some selective toning in the bkg to have a little fun with the colors there

Honestly man, these are just minor suggestions but this frame is mega. Way to go!!

Fantastic! Glad to see you got some action as most set-up shots are boring and without challenge. This, however, is a wonderful capture. The color and detail look great, and the smooth BG is perfect.
While the bird cracks as presented, I might crop in a touch to highlight the bird even more. That assumes you have the pixels/detail to do it though. But a very well-executed and memorable shot
    regardless. Bravo!

Looks good to me Will just as is, I like the composition and the subtle colours in the background. Bird is well focused and sharp.

Really sweet frame Will! Great detail, action, BG and colors! I personally like the vertical crop and think it was a good decision. Well done

Will, if you are going back, bump up the ISO to say 6400 to get even more SS and a tad more DoF, I doubt you will have 20fps, it's probably less, but the faster the SS the more chances... What did you have the Case set too, as I might get you to change it.

It wasn't easy, as the distance between the perch and the water was only about four feet....
That's about right Will, you could also try focusing on the water and get it emerging. We timed it and from perch to diving and back to the perch is 2.8 secs, so pre focus. Get yourself a cable release, one that's compatible to allowing fast SS. Just watch also for some tail tail signs before it dives, you will soon get to know what to look for.

Great work in progress, best of luck.

Whilst I've seen plenty of diving kingfisher shots, its the little head turn that raises this one above the norm for me. Being able to see the eye is a huge plus, excellent work

Thanks for that Steve...I have the camera set on case 2.....I agree that more SS and a wee bit more DOF would be better.....For this shot I was on mechanical shutter.....maybe should have went electrical giving me approx 40 fps....and a whole lot more to choose from...

Sometimes I do not understand nit-picking stunning images like this one. "A wee bit this" or "a tad more that" sounds like someone who wants too type more words.
