Hi folks ... I had a exciting afternoon with a surprise
First I went to my local photo store to pick up my newest toy , had or wanted to get the RF 100 - 500 ... as I am still struggling with my shoulder . I need more time to recover from that ... tried to shoot with my big glasses , but it was not easy and I become quickly exhausted when hand holding the big whites .
AS I am going on a short holiday in October I thought I need a lighter lens to be able to shoot handholding ... after some research I decided I give the 100 - 500 a chance , if it does not work it will go back onto the market .
So I picked up the lens and went to the Squirrel location nearby .... not much in terms of Squirrels , but I stumbled over this little critter . Luckily he was not very shy .... never seen one in daylight before , so was a really happy camper . New toy and new subject to photograph .... not the most ideal thing , but I shot a lot of frames .
This is one of them ...
With hindsight I should have stopped down the lens to F 10 , but forgot about it as I was too excited because of two new things .

    Canon EOS R3
    RF 100 - 500 IS L
    HH

    F8 ; Iso 5000 ; 1/1000sec

cropped to 80 % of FF

Processed with DPP 4 and PSCC 2022 ; added a bit of canvas to the RHS

Thanks for watching and commenting to my last posting

    Cheers Andreas

An increasingly rare sight in the UK they are becoming endangered. I like the low angle, colours and details are exceptionally good, though I still feel sometimes the greens (as in the foreground blades of grass) appear a little vivid. A little more DOF may have been good but I think it is a super shot.

Excellent view of this cute little beast, Andreas! Your shooting angle and proximity create a very intimate view. Details look great; good move to close down to f/8 for extra DOF. Higher ISO held up well!

Very cute Andreas, nice POV and well framed. Good techs, well exposed, colours spot on, sharp where it matters. Looks awesome for a big crop ( 80%)... I agree with you ,F10 would have been ideal...but I still like it very much
Terribly sorry for being absent for so long, lots of challenges work wise and been away for the past two weeks, hope to come back soon with some images. Glad you are well and posting, thank you so much Andreas

    Kind regards,

Wow it is incredibly sharp. Look at the detail in the nose........Striking interesting image of a fascinating little creature. So many differant textures to look at. I agree about f/10 and although the grass seems very green i would imagine that is exactly how it was

    Kind regards,
Oh busy little sister .... do not forget to take a break from time to time , if time a allows . Stress does make one sick ..... at times .

You misunderstood my cropping ... this is 80% of FF , meaning I have thrown away 20 % of pixels . So the crop is moderate

Good to hear from you ... cheers Andreas

Either the lens isn't delivering in IQ Andreas, or to me you have lifted the area around the eye slightly because it lacks that critical sharpness and appears coarse. Adding a small adjustment on the snout should ease the slight loss in DOF as it tails off. Perhaps stepping back and being smaller in frame with more habitat might have been nicer?

Thanks Steve for your comments ... cannot follow your thoughts regarding the lens quality . Same lens and camera used as with the Squirrel image ... if there is an issue than it is operator error , would not blame the toys at all .
I have for sure lifted the eye area slightly ....

    Cheers Andreas

You've answered the question and clarified my point.
