Lovely fur detail, colours and tones very good indeed. I am guessing more than one light source but one looks rather dominant. The eye could be better illuminated but I think it is ok, you obviously cannot control the angle in which the badger is going to point it's head. I think it's important we can see the claws - ready to dig. yes good shot showing natural behaviour.
I like the image with the exception of the Red campion, I am pretty sure it has been stuck in the loose soil, ( I have never seen a stem like that so close to the ground in the absence of foliage).

Hi Steve ... always special , at least for me , to get images of the Badger .
Love the clear view to the subject and the IQ is exceptional .
Without knowing the original lighting I just guess you have created the spotlight effect in post ???!!! That said , I would like to see a bit more light on the face and might get more neutral dark tones as they are slightly too cool for my taste . Might move the crop to the left .
Apart from personal difference in tastes a really cool image , flowers are giving a nice touch ...natural or not .

Beautiful image of a fascinating creature. Low angle is FANTASTIC and the claws add nicely. I agree that the light could have fallen onto the subject in a more advantageos way however thats nit picking. Are these guys as difficult to photograph as Honey Badgers....... Not sure about poetic license imho

They are more nocturnal, HB are around all day, so I guess so, but hopefully you will get to see some HB postings soon. European badgers tend not to eat tyres as you are moving, unlike HB's.Are these guys as difficult to photograph as Honey Badgers

Side lighting is very dramatic, and I love the low view of the claws. However, the lack of eye contact is really tough for me. His face is just shadowed enough that I have to search for the eye for a split second. Processing looks great.

As you know we were fortunate to spot a Honey badger in the Kruger Park last week, a bit far though. I will share an image or two once I get to process. In May we had a number of Honey Badgers sniffling at our feet while preparing dinner...I think I would have been more comfortable with a leopard or a lion...did not make a move and allowed those fellows to take whatever they liked off the kitchen counter. They know how to open cooler boxes and lift lids from pots and pans...One of the smartest species I have ever encountered and I have huge respect for these chaps.
Back to your image, I like it as presented and would not change anything. Beautifully processed...thank you Steve for sharing
