Default How to size and post images on BPN.

    Image size for posting.
Allowed image size is 800 pixels on the widest side.
And allowed file size should not exceed 200kb.

How to size image for web.

    http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...read.php?t=839

    How to post an image.

    1. Click on "New Thread" in the forum of your choice.

    2. When window is open you will see a section "Additional Options", click on "Manage Attachments"

    3. When attachment window opens you will see a "browse" button. This is the one you will most likely use to upload an image from your computer to the host computer paying close attention to the posting guidelines for size, etc. Once you find the file on your computer click the upload button to the right of the browse button.

    4. After upload is complete, go to your message window and fill in your "Title" then in the "Message Window" give as much info as you can to help those who will critique your image. This includes but is not limited to conditions, camera, settings (ISO, f/stop, Shutter speed, support, flash). Anything else you can think of? If no > "Preview Post".

    5. Clicking "Preview Post" first will show you what everyone who opens your post will see. If there is something missing, go back to your open window and add it then click Preview Post again....do this until you are satisfied with your post then click Submit

Still having trouble posting an image? Leave a message here and we will try our best to answer it.Once you get it right it will be second nature, it may seem daunting at first but give it a shot!! :)

    George,
I posted my first image yesterday in "Egar to Learn" Every thing went ok until I receieved the image back for preview. The saturation was dramatically decreased from the image I sent. Also the focus seemed affected. Can you give me some help with this. The original the image that I adjusted to send displays well on my monitor, and the monitor is calibrated. I have reviewed the steps I went through to prepare the image and can't find any obvious problems. Any ideas?
    Thank you

Looks like I should have scrolled down further to this forum to post my first photo. I posted my first one to the big boy site (Avian wild and free). Future photos will be posted here until I graduate. Thanks.

OK this is my first time and I'm having a hard time. I am using Adobe Elements and the resizing is getting the best of me. I finally got a pic posted and it came out smaller on the screen than others. I read all the instructions on the site. I used 800 on the longest side and 72 dpi and it is still to large. Got down to 56 dpi and 400 on long side to get it to post. Could you tell me the dimentions I should be using? Thanks Judy Hogan

    Default New Format?

    Hi james:

Is new format permanent, or have I clicked a button by mistake?

Have found that paper clip attachments are better quality (Same as previous format) than the thumbnails in thread . . . . is it me, or is it as described?

    Regards

Maybe i spoke too soon, tonight thumbnail attachments come up as good as paper clip attachments. Though a couple of Thumbnail attachments came up with the inferior photo on black background in a standard size, not actual as Paper Clip

Attached is Thumbnail attachment from thread. Seems to me if you hover mouse over Thumbnail attachment too long before clicking, you get this version.

Not sure what is going on, never have had this problem before..I always size the longest side 1009 horizontal or vertical and let things go. Now it seems that if your image is longer vertical you are limited to 800 long side?

Test..I just tried to upload a file 755x1009 that I have already put up (here) and now it won't take it??

    Hi Nonda:

When you browse and upload your photo the specs listed are:
JPG ~ Size 200 KB ~ Max Width 1024 px ~ Max Height 800 px.

    Limited to width 1024, your width is 755 . . . Undersize
    Limited to height 800, your height is 1009 . . . Oversize

Has been that way for a long time since they changed it from 800x800 which a lot of folks still use

I use 800 x 800 in PS by using File>Automate>Fit Image> in box that appears I enter 800 px in both boxes which will keep me legal both ways as the long size is never oversize.

If for some reason I want to use 1024 px width, I use image>image size and have the width 1024 px, and if the height is over 800 px, I adjust it to 800 px or less.

    Best regards

    Uncle Gus

    George,
Your instructions were perfect...until I got to "Manage Attachments" which didn't appear for me. Under posting rules: "You may not post attachments" appeared.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    Default Posting problem

Hmmm. It has been a while since I posted an image here - but I have posted successfully before! Today I seem to have "lost" the ability to Manage Attachments. That is, I click on new thread, go to additional options, and there is no manage attachments option. Am I overlooking something? Thanks,

    Jim

Hi, I uploaded my bear; did the preview and realized that it was the wrong image; however, it was already posted. How do you back out and not post the uploaded image if in the preview you realize it is wrong.

    Default Frustrated.

So I've read the directions carefully but cannot figure this stuff out! Just like a bunch of others before me, I cannot seem to find "manage attachments." Why is this posting process such a complicated procedure? All I want is some constructive critique..

    Question File size?

    Hi
I would like to post pictures but have trouble with the file size.

Example: File type JPEG, Resolution dpi 72, hgt 76 pix, width 720 pix: but file size is 1.2 MB which is too big. Please advise how to acheive the right file size. I use Nikon Capture NX2.

    Thanks Ray Rozema:)

    Hello Jen,

Don't know if you received a reply yet, but this is what I found out. I hadn't posted for a long time, and either forgot to renew my membership, or didn't ever become a member! Membership is only $20US and helps offset the server costs, etc. I registered and immediately could post attachments. Hope this helps,

    Jim

    Hello Ray,

I'm not familiar with the Nikon software - I use Photoshop exclusively. But I should guess that there must be a similar option to "Save for Web". In Photoshop when you do that it will save as 72 dpi, and allows you the option to resize the image (to the maximum 800 px on the widest side), and adjust the jpeg quality (to come down to the 150K maximum). Hope this helps,

    Jim

Hi Ray Good advice from James !!!

Best method is saving for web from Photoshop ... would not recommend posting directly from NX2

Once you are in PS it makes no difference the dpi just just worry about the K !! You could also use save as then play with the jpeg quality. At around 800 pixels a setting of 5 to 7 seems to work but highly recommend using saving for web!! Will give best quality !!!

If you have trouble please PM !!!

Hi, I think you should add to the sticky that you can only post one image within a 1440 minute period. OR is that one image per Board?

When does the 1440 minutes run from when to when? Yesterday I posted an image at 10:16 am on my computer; it is now 10:27 am - more than 24 hours and I am being told by the system that my 1 image allotment is still in effect.

    Cheers, Jay

How do I post a photo??? I read the Sticky, but the Additional Options area on my screen doesn't offer that option you say it will. In fact, a list of 4 thing I may do or may not do says I may not post an attachment. How do I post a photo?

    Hello Kelly,

A frequently asked question! It's all about membership - scroll back up about 4 or 5 messages to a reply I made on April 13. The $20 fee helps offset server costs so that we can post attachments. Hope this helps!!

    Default Posting the Photoshop way

In PS select "File - Automate - Fit Image". In the window that pops up set the width to 1024 and the height to 800. This will work for both horizontal and vertical images without having to do it each time, as these numbers will stay there unless you change them, so you can do this for each image that you are ready to post to BPN. To save even more time, make this an action and assign it to a key. You will end up with an image that is no wider than 1024 pixels and no taller than 800.

When you are ready to save the image, select "Save for Web & Devices". In the save window, click on the little triangle (or optimize menu icon) that you see just below and to the right of the "save" button. In the menu that pops up click "Optimize to File Size" and set that value to 195K. I find that if you set this to 200K sometimes PS makes it a few bytes too big. (This value will also persist unless you change it.)

Your file should now be all set to upload to BPN. Click "Save" and save your file, then use the "Manage Attachments" button to browse your computer for the file. Select the file and click "Upload". If you have done everything correctly your file will be uploaded to the BPN server and you can close the window. Then click on "Preview Post" and make sure you have the correct file loaded and your text is complete. If your image is the masterpiece you envisioned, click "Submit Reply" and go back to the forum and admire your work. :D

I tried to post an image. Clicked on "New Thread". When the window opened, there was no "Manage Attachments" under "Additional Options" to click on. Why is that? What do I have to do?
